CONTENTS PAGE DECONSTRUCTIONS

CONTENTS PAGE DECONSTRUCTIONS

1. Composition

  • How is the page laid out: conventional grid, alternative grid etc what effect does it have- why?

I think that this contents page is laid out quite conventional. One neat, clean text column makes this magazine look expensive and mature.

The word ‘contents’ is divided into 3 parts, it makes this contents page more alternative and unconventional. However it just makes this magazine look less boring, more creative and arty.

I think they decided to make this contents like that, because they wanted to attract specific target audience, which I think is mature, creative people.

  • How are the text columns laid out?

There is just one text column on this content and it looks very conventional. This column makes this magazine looks more expensive and mature.
For better understanding of composition there are used subheads, which are Fashion and Features. Every article has short description of what is it about. It will help readers to find most interesting and relative articles for them.

  • How are the supporting images laid out – within the text columns, rotated, conventional etc?

There are no any supportive images in this contents page, because of the theme and style of this magazine. They don’t want to spoil it with useless pictures.

Also TA of this magazine more likely to read features, supporting images won’t attract them.

2. Photography

  • Is there a main contents page image: of what, why?

Main image of this contents page is a photo of the man. He looks very serious/sad, a bit aggressive, and mysterious, it makes him look sexy.

There is a woman hand, which is holding a heart. This heart is only colour piece on this photograph. It makes man’s emotions very understandable. He looks upset, like after break up. This woman broke his hart and made his world colourless. I think it is why they made this colour in black and white.

I think that this picture will be close to the target audience of this magazine, because almost every person felt something like that. Also this picture looks very fashionable and interesting. Readers can see on this picture both creativity and fashion.

  • Are there supporting images? : For which articles and why?

There are no any supporting images, because this magazine had to be mature and luxury.

With supportive pictures magazine becoming messy, cheap and usually looks desperate in trying to attract readers.

  • What is the style of the photography? Effects, black and white etc?

This picture obviously was changed. In Photoshop they made it grey and left just one piece in its natural colour. This piece is heart.

In certain places I can see that they decreased some shadows, its made this photo looks more studio-like. They made man’s skin looks very fresh and I think they get rid of any spots or wrinkles. They made this picture very fashionable and interesting for both, male and female. They will be attracted to this image, but because of different reasons.

3. Graphics

  • Are there any supporting graphics – icons, logos, illustrations? Why, where?

There is a logo of this magazine on the background. It is a grey ‘V’ letter. This letter is the name of the magazine. I think it reminds us about the magazine name, it is their trademark. I was looking on the other contents pages of this magazine and I realized that all of them have this letter on it. It could be showed obviously or it could be hidden.

It looks very modern and fashionable.

4. Text features

  • Is there a main page headline?

Yes, there are headline, because style of this magazine is conventional and headline of the page will help readers to understand purpose of this page. In this magazine there is a headline and its called ‘CONTENTS’. However, despite the fact that this magazine is trying to be conventional in some ways, they wrote ‘CONTENTS’ in quite alternative way. They divided this word in tree independent parts. This looks quite wrong for this style of magazine.

I think it is because of the target audience of this magazine. They are adults, mature and creative people. This magazine is trying to be serious, but entertained. They don’t want to be boring.

  • Are the contents spilt into sections? Why, how?

Yes, this content is split into two sections ‘features’ and ‘fashion’. It is quite unconventional, because usually magazines have more sections. However it looks very unconventional, unique and modern.

They split it into two sections because it will be easier for readers to find articles which might interested them.

  • What styles of fonts are being used? Differ for each section or feature?

I think they used 2 or 3 different font types.
First one is used for the heading of this page. Word ‘CONTENTS’ is written in big, bold letters. It makes it noticeable, and makes it easy to read. It is written in black, because it will stand out from the grey page, but won’t really change the palette and purpose of using grey colours.

Next font has been used for the names of content sections. Font is looking very feminine, nice and interesting. This font looks very classy and makes this magazine more luxurious and mature.

This difference makes people pay attention to it. Despite the fact that this font has much smaller letter size, they showed us that it has second level of importance.

All the other text I think is written in the same font, but in much smaller size. I think this font is very conventional and minimalistic.

5. Overall theme

  • What colour palette is used?

They used grey, black and red palette. You can see different selections of grey everywhere on this picture.
However one piece they left in its natural colour. They left heart, only colour piece, which is in red. Grey colour around this heart makes red stand out and makes it even brighter.

Grey colour suggests emotions of the man in the main picture. He looks sad and angry. It is why red in this contents page have very deep meaning. First of all it represents anger and aggressiveness.

Also this colour represents passion.

I think that this picture has history. We can see a hand, which is holding a heart next to men’s chest. There is an illusion that this hand just ripped out his heart. We can’t live without our heart, it is why everything around is grey and black. These colours are colours of death.

I think this man is sad and angry because of the problems in his relationships.

  • How does this relate to the genre/design style/mission of the magazine?

Photography style, font and colours relates to the genre. On the photo we can see serious pop/hip-hop star. He looks aggressive like all the artists of this genre. This magazine is trying to cover two themes, music and fashion. All this design is made for a specific purpose, which is attracting its target audience.

It is aimed more towards a female audience; it is why they are playing so much on the artist’s emotions.

The magazine looks very clean and expensive, because its TA is looking for that. This TA can afford to pay more for better things. They don’t need any kind of promotions to buy something.

1.   What is the colour scheme? :

  • Is it based around a selected ‘palette’ of colours or a particular selection of tones within a colour palette?

Palette of this magazine is based around 3 different colours. It is red, white and black.

This colours looks god and contrast with each other.

  • What does it suggest about the style of magazine or the theme of the issue??

Red colour might suggest something about blood, passion and anger. This colour is very bright, what makes this magazine stand out.

Also they decided to use as fewer colours as possible what might suggest that this magazine is quite mature.

Black colour might stand for the death and tragedy; it makes this magazine darker and brings feeling of fear.

I like how white colour plays with red and black. White brought harmony into this magazine. It made red and black less aggressive and made it look more expensive and nice.

All that suggests that this magazine is for elder people, because it looks minimalistic and expensive. It might suggest that in this magazine they can touch themes like death and sex.

  • Does it relate to the content?

It does. Their headline is ‘BANG BANG YOU’RE DEAD’. It is written in red colour, what suggests blood, a lot of black colour around stands for word DEAD I think.

  • Does it relate to the main image?

I think these colours relate to the main image, because the girl on the photo looks quite aggressive and evil. It is why black and red perfectly fit into this cover page.

2.   What colours are the fonts/text? Do the colours relate to the image or content… how?

Only headline of this magazine is written in red. I think that this colour perfectly fit main theme of these cover, which is DEATH. Red stands for anger, blood and passion, which indie fans have for music. It will attract people. Also red perfectly goes with emotions on the model’s face. She looks aggressive and sexy, like this colour.

Information about this magazine is written in white. It makes it almost invisible. I think they made it like that, because they didn’t want to destruct audience from the main picture.

Also, they masthead also is written in white, I think they did it like that, because they wanted to bring some harmony and light into this cover. It looks brighter and mature like that.

3.   How many different types of font are used? Do they relate to the cover theme, content and\or image?

I can see there two different types of font. One is for their masthead. It is very minimalistic like this magazine.

Second font looks like it was written by hand. Also it looks a bit like it is blood. It perfectly fit the content of this magazine. This font makes this magazine more alternative, how it should be, because of indie genre.

4.   Do they have drop shadows or are they outlined? How does this affect its visibility on the cover, does it show an order of importance?

In this cover they didn’t drop any shadows and they didn’t outlined anything. However we still can see everything very well. Without any dropped shadows this magazine looks more luxurious and neat.

5.   Notice how the text and image elements are aligned… why?

Image is aligned very conventionally and it looks quite weird on the alternative magazine.

However, text is placed perfectly and it plays role of reminder of magazine style. It is a bit rotated and goes into photo.
This cover page is very minimalistic, because they have just one headline and that’s all.

6.   Notice what elements sit on top of others?

There are not a lot of elements, however the only existed headline sit on top of the main picture. I think editors made it like that, because they wanted to show that it is connected.

Text elements

1.   Where is the price, date, barcode… how big is the price text? Is the size and placement important… why?

Price, date and barcode are placed in the left, bottom corner of the magazine. They use tiny shrift for that, probably because they didn’t want people to be destructed from the cover.

2.   Notice where and what style any ‘promotions’ are… e.g. free CD, or poster inside, free pull-out; are they in a separate box or section? How does this affect the order of visual importance and general layout?

There are no any promotions because of the target audience of this magazine. They don’t need it because they are buying this magazine not because of free promotions, but because of the information, which has this magazine, and buy putting some kind of promotions they will go into different TA.

3.   Notice how the content of the text features have an order of importance… what is the order and why? How have they achieved this?

On this cover there is just one headline and this article is most important, because this is minimalistic style and they are putting on the cover just most important things.

It is very unconventional for alternative magazine, because they are not trying to attract audience by promotions or interesting, distractive headlines.

4.   Is there web address or other media?… obviously placed or not … ?

Their web address is not placed obvious. I was trying to find it for a quite long time. They placed it on the bottom, left corner. That means that they are not trying to make people go to that website, however, if they will be interested they always can visit it.

 Images

  1. What is the image? What is the composition of image?

On the image we can see a model, which looks angry and mysterious. She has white skin, black hair and red lips. This goes very well with the main colour palette of this cover. She is placed in the center of the magazine’s cover page, which looks wrong, and unconventional for alternative magazine.

We can see just her face and scarf, which she is wearing, This scarf might suggest that she is from US, or that she likes indie style, because all this things with flags looks very alternative and cute.

2.   How is the artist/band ‘represented’ … explain?

This model is about 18 years old.

She is represented like a tuff, strong person. She looks quite angry and interesting. She looks a bit antisocial and she makes an eye contact with readers, that make us feel that we are in some kind of relationships with her and with this magazine.

Scarf, which she is wearing suggest something about her style. She likes indie rock style and music. She likes street fashion.

3.   Has the image been affected in Photoshop, been cut out or with its original background? Does its post-production treatment relate to the subject, theme, content etc?

I think that this picture was made in studio and it wasn’t cut out. I think they used Photoshop on this picture just to make skin looks neat and fresh and improving lightening.

4.   How does the colours in the image affect the general cover colour scheme, or has the image been manipulated to fit the colour scheme of the cover?

I think that this image perfectly fit colour scheme of this cover. I am not sure did main image affect the general colour scheme or has the image been manipulated, because the colours of text perfectly looks with model lips and fit the content of the headline.

Possibly it is just good work of editors.

5.   How many images are there? Where in layout, why?

There is just one main picture. This picture is placed in the very centre of this magazine what makes it looks nice, neat and conventional.

It is very unusual for this magazine style, because usually it is messy and looks cheaper, because their TA is younger.

6.   Are there any ‘thumbnails’ [little images] … where, why, are they accompanied by a caption or feature text

There are no any thumbnails, because this magazine has different TA, they don’t need it. Also if this magazine will have thumbnails it will look cheaper and will change luxurious of this magazine.

Composition

1.   How has the cover been composed – grid use?

They used conventional grid. Picture is placed in the center and everything looks nice and neat. It is very interesting how did they break all the conventions of alternative, indie magazine. They made tis magazine to minimalistic and conventional for usual Indie magazine.

2.   Is it a conventional grid composition or does it break convention… how and effect?

This grid composition breaks all conventions by being to conventional for alternative magazine.

It looks wrong and different. This makes it even more interesting and mysterious, even more unconventional.

Target audience

1.   How has the cover appealed to its target audience?

When my TA is looking on this cover, they imagine themselves on it. They are starting to think about history of this picture. They are thinking why this model is so angry? Why it is looking at them?
They like just look at this picture, because it is beautiful. They like how this model looks on this photo.

2.   What is the target audience – age – gender – hobbies – technology use – internet and tv use – shopping/fashion – how they experience music and music videos etc.… how do you know?

Target audience of this magazine is mainly females between 17 and 25. There is percentage of male readers, however it will be much smaller, because of the fashion part of magazine.

They are likely to be sociable, however they like to be a bit mysterious. They are users websites such as FACEBOOK, TWITTER, MYSPACE and YOUTUBE.

They are using it to communicate with their friends, follow artists and bands which they are fans of. They are using YOUTUBE to find new artists or bands and watching their favourite videos.

They like indie fashion, however they are more mature then young indie fans, that’s mean that they will wear tasteful clothes with reminder of indie style. Usually they are buying their clothes in shops such as ZARA or TOPSHOP. It is not very expensive, but very nice and fashionable.

They are using all kind of Apple production, because it is very popular and easy to use. Also they like to use it because Apple production making their communication with friends cheaper and easier. They can use there programs like WhatsApp or iMessage.

Usually they are listening to music on their iPods or iPhones and downloading it through AppStore.

3.   How does the tone and register work to appeal to the target audience?
Register: Formal, informal, casual, street, slang use, urban, serious, funny, sensational, sarcastic, sophisticated etc?
Tone: contents? About what sort of things?

The register they are using in this magazine is urban, casual language with sleng used, The reason for that is very simple; by using this type of language reads will feel themselves very comfortable. They will understand magazine perfectly, and there will be feeling of communication.

Tone of this magazine will be mature. It will be possible in this magazine to talk about any kind of things.
However main themes will be fashion, music and probably relationships.

MAGAZINE COVER DECONSTRUCTION

MAGAZINE COVER

DECONSTRUCTION SKILLS

Graphics

1. What is the colour scheme? :

  • Is it based around a selected ‘palette’ of colours or a particular selection of tones within a colour palette?

The palette is based around orange and black colours. These colours are very strong and bright. They contrast with each other, so they stand out even more.

There is a big selection of orange tones on this cover page; brown, yellow and creamy. These colours are different and weird. Orange colour is very fresh, and reminds me of fruit.  Also orange is very bright; it will bring people’s attention to this magazine. When people look at this cover they can understand that this magazine is alternative and they won’t find there something about politics or science.

Black brought to this picture reminder of rock genre.

  • What does it suggest about the style of magazine or the theme of the issue??

I think that these colours might suggest that this magazine is very fresh and interesting. It suggests that the information, which you will find in there, will entertain you and won’t disappoint you. It will bring fresh and different view on indie style of music.

  • Does it relate to the content?

No, in the content there is nothing related to orange colour.

  • Does it relate to the main image?

On the image there is some tones of orange colour, so it is possible that by using orange colour in text they were trying to bring harmony to the picture.

2. What colours are the fonts/text? Do the colours relate to the image or content… how?

The text is in orange, white and black colour. It doesn’t relate to image or content, but it relates to the main colour scheme.

3. How many different types of font are used? Do they relate to the cover theme, content and\or image.

They used around 3 different fonts.

First font is some kind of ARTROCKER trademark, they are using this font for their masthead in every magazine and people already know it. This font looks like it was painted, that goes very good with ART piece of the magazine name. The way in which ‘E’ was written in the name of this magazine reminds about alternative style of the magazine.

Second font they used for their main headline.  It is very unusual and it makes this article stand out from others and readers firstly will read this headline, because it looks more important

4. Do they have drop shadows or are they outlined? How does this affect its visibility on the cover, does it show an order of importance?

They didn’t drop any shadows. However, some pieces of text they put into the boxes. That makes this text stand out from this picture, makes it more visible and meaningful. It shows that this text is more important than other.

5. Notice how the text and image elements are aligned… why?

Text is aligned randomly, what makes it a bit messy.  It goes very well with magazine style.

6. Notice what elements sit on top of others?

Main news about group ‘PLASTIS CINES’ sits on top of the other news, because they are connected. However, it is on top because it is more important and valid.

Text elements

1.Where is the price, date, barcode… how big is the price text? Is the size and placement important… why?

The price, date and barcode are placed in the bottom, in the right corner. They used small letters, because in their case price can’t play role of promotion. It is monthly magazine, that’s mean that magazines price will be quit high. Also this placement leave readers concentrate on the headlines and don’t distract them from it.

2. Notice where and what style any ‘promotions’ are… e.g. free CD, or poster inside, free pull-out; are they in a separate box or section? How does this affect the order of visual importance and general layout?

Their magazine is monthly, it is already quite expensive, so TA of this magazine won’t be attracted by any kind of promotions, they don’t need free posters or CD’s. Also its makes this magazine looks more expensive. It make people believe that they will find there interesting and useful information, that will show that their articles are good enough without any promotions.

3. Notice how the content of the text features have an order of importance… what is the order and why? How have they achieved this?

When you are looking at this cover, first thing on which you will be looking is a headline ‘PLASTIS CINES’. They did it on purpose, because it is their main news. They achieved that by putting this headline into the centre of this cover, writing it in very big letters and putting it into the colourful bubble.

Second headline, on which we will be looking at, starts with word ‘EXCLUSIVE’. That’s mean that this news also is quite interesting and important. However they had to show that this article is just on second place. So they decided to use smaller letters, but also put it in the bubble next to the main news, so when people will read main headline they eyes will automatically read ‘EXCLUSIVE’

4. Is there web address or other media?… obviously placed or not … ?

They placed their web address straight after masthead, it is placed quite obviously, so it will be very easy for readers to find it if they will be interested in their web page. On this page you can find all the information about future magazines, you can read latest music news.

 Images

1. What is the image? What is the composition of image ?

The composition of this image is unconventional. They make it looks a bit messy and random. This composition goes very good with editorial style.

On this image we can see girls band. They look alternative and interesting on this picture. I think every girl was trying to show her personality.

All of them have different positions and emotions, it might suggest what should we expect from them.

Picture itself is placed unconventional, because there is a lot of white space above girls head.

2. How is the artist/band ‘represented’ … explain?

On the picture we can see girls band. From the early beginning we can say that they are alternative, creative people. Their placement helps us to understand their nature. All of them have different personality. One, which is from the right, seems to be very crazy and open-minded. One, which sits on the middle, looks a bit frustrated and destructed.

In each girl audience can find themselves. It will attract them to this magazine. This band represented as ordinary teenagers

3. Has the image been affected in Photoshop, been cut out or with its original background? Does its post-production treatment relate to the subject, theme, content etc?

I think that the background been cut out, because in the picture there is just white background and it looks unrealistic. It doesn’t relate to any content of this magazine, but it looks alternative.

4. How does the colours in the image affect the general cover colour scheme, or has the image been manipulated to fit the colour scheme of the cover?

I think that colours on the picture made general cover scheme. Main colours on the photo are yellow, black and orange and in text they decided to use same colours. It looks very nice and fit main picture very well.

5. How many images are there? Where in layout, why? / Are there any ‘thumbnails’ [little images] … where, why, are they accompanied by a caption or feature text?

There is just one picture and no thumbnails, because this magazine is expensive and monthly, it has good reputation and it is already popular. That means that they don’t need to attract readers, because they already know this magazine and trust it. Despite the fact that this magazine is alternative and main target audience are teenagers, this magazine doesn’t need any kind of promotions or pictures, which will help them, attract readers.

Main picture is layout quite unconventionally, because of the magazine style.

Composition

1. How has the cover been composed – grid use?

Grid of this cover page looks quite unconventionally, what proves alternative style of this magazine. It looks like text was placed randomly and picture was moved from the center of the cover page. Cover was composed a bit messy and it looks very good on the cover of alternative magazine.

2. Is it a conventional grid composition or does it break convention… how and effect?

This magazines grid breaks conventions, however it remains very conventional in its genre. Everyone expect that from INDIE ROCK magazine. Rotated text and unconventionally placed photo makes it conventional alternative magazine.

Target audience

1. How has the cover appealed to its target audience?

Firs of all colours of this magazine are very bright and funky. This colours can’t appealed to elder audience. However it is perfect colour for teenagers, which are main TA of this magazine.

Also main picture of this magazine is photo of teenage girls band. That has to attract and inspire readers, because all the teenagers want to be famous and they can find themselves in this photo.

Unconventional font and rotated text, suggest that this magazine is alternative, it will also attract TA, because they will understand that all this magazine appealed to them.

2. What is the target audience – age – gender – hobbies – technology use – internet and tv use – shopping/fashion – how they experience music and music videos etc.… how do you know?

Target audience of this magazine are young adults male or female, probably between 16/19 years. On that age they want to socialize as much as possible, they are going to the parties and to the clubs. They are very creative.

Their hobbies are listening to music, fashion, urban life, festivals, parties.

Internet takes big part of their life, because there they can find everything what they need. They can follow their favourite singers or find new bands on YOUTUBE.

They favourite shops probably are TOPSHOP or RIVERISLEND, there they can find nice clothes and accessorize of their style.

Their style is very similar to rock fan style, however it will be more feminine and colourful.

They Like TV programs which they can relay on themselves. It is TV dramas like Skins or Misfits. Also they like to watch MTV, because they are interested in finding new bands and singers.

Apple production is very popular in this target audience, because it helps them communicate with things like iMessage, Twitter, Facebook, youtube and Instagram. They are downloading music straight to their IPods or IPhones. It is very easy and fast way.

3. How does the tone and register work to appeal to the target audience?
Register: Formal, informal, casual, street, slang use, urban, serious, funny, sensational, sarcastic, sophisticated etc?
Tone: contents? About what sort of things?

The register of this magazine has to be casual, urban with some slang. It won’t be serious, because in this type of magazine they won’t talk about series things. It could be funny or even sarcastic. That will help magazine to communicate with TA.

Tone could be quite mature. They can talk about things like sex and drugs. Music probably stays like a main theme.

4. Are there any ‘incentives to buy’ that are trying to attract a particular audience or new readers… how, why?

I think that there are not any. However colour of this magazine might attract some people and can even make them to buy this magazine.
